The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved before then.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

An analysis argued that a funding lapse limits the authority of the government to carry out firings, referencing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the very day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but excluding the beginning of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
