Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue
As any significant honors show nears, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
